About Designer Knitting Yarns and me!

In March 2009 I decided to take a leap of fate and buy Designer Knitting Yarns from Janet who started the business. So I handed in my notice from my job as a teaching assistant and jumped in with both feet.
I have always been crafty which is definitely my Mums influence. I made all sorts of things as a child and learned any craft going.
I trained as an NNEB and did a ‘proper’ job for a few years after college but I always had some sort of craft project on the go.

After ill health I decided life was too short so I handed in my notice and opened a needlecraft shop which had to move premises 3 times in two years because it just kept getting bigger and bigger. We also offered classes in a wide range of craft techniques. I trained as an adult learning tutor and taught patchwork, embroidery, beading, card making and various other crafts for a local college. I toured around patchwork groups and gave workshops. I gained my City and Guilds in embroidery .

Then along came Lisa my eldest daughter. I’d waited for such a long time for her that I made the decision to put the business on hold close up and enjoy my time with her. Then Tori my youngest joined our happy mob a couple of years ago.

Liz: Designer Knitting YarnsWhich brings us up to now. -

If you miss a few bits out like the Kajagoogoo 80’s vibe I had going on for a while, working as a waitress and a chambermaid to earn extra cash, the dodgy boyfriends and walking home in high heels on my own at 2 in the morning and feeling no pain. (Now I can’t even walk as far as the car in high heels!!)

I always knew I should be working for myself doing something creative that I love. Designer Knitting Yarns was such a good opportunity I couldn’t think of better time to take the leap.

My love is natural fibres, dyeing and felting. I’m addicted to bags and shoes (but knitted shoes are not always practical)

So…..

  • I want to develop those areas of the business. (Felting dyeing and natural yarns)
  • I want to offer a wide range of yarns from budget to luxury
  • I want to build a knitting community
  • I want to make lots of bags and develop new designs
  • I want my customers to make lots of bags and develop their own ideas
  • I want people to enjoy visiting me and my yarns
  • I want to create interesting and exciting items and keep challenging my skills.
  • I want an evening with Eddie Izzard But I guess that’s nothing to do with DK yarns.

Don’t want much do I?

I have so many ideas buzzing around in my head I really want to make Designer Knitting Yarns a thriving business that is fun and inspires creativity.

I hope that 2010 will be a productive year.

Hugs Liz
